Art Deco spirit, geometry and brass
Art Deco, born in the 1920s and 1930s, is recognised by a precise vocabulary, geometric motifs, curves and arches, noble materials, golden metal finishes, a bold contrast between black and gold. Taken up again in 2026 in a contemporary version, the Art Deco spirit works beautifully in bathrooms, halls and living rooms, as long as the signals are measured.
At Atelier Matière, we compose Art Deco-inspired projects for Parisian apartments, boutiques, cafés and townhouses. The challenge is twofold, to recover the density of the materials (veined marbles, golden brass, velvet, precious wood) and to pick the geometric motifs that still hold up today. Here are the families that compose this register.
Veined marbles and black-and-white contrast
Nero Marquina for signature counters and floors, Calacatta for claddings and light walls, Rosso Levanto for a hit of colour. Solid marble from Petra Stones and Marmi, in 2 or 3 cm thicknesses, draws fireplaces, washbasin counters and pavements in chequerboard or opus incertum. A bold black-and-white contrast with a well-read traversing vein defines Art Deco better than any applied motif.
Flutes and geometric motifs in terracotta
The Giulio Romano, Mantegna and Sant'Andrea collections from Fornace Brioni (art director Cristina Celestino, Gonzaga collection) reinterpret Art Deco reliefs in glazed terracotta. Vertical flutes, trompe-l'œil triangles and architectural frames, the tiles assemble pattern by pattern to compose a signature wall. Installed in a hall, a bathroom or behind a bar, they bring the graphic density of the Art Deco register without the heaviness.
Golden brass and warm finishes
Taps in brushed English Gold (STELLA Sirius, Roma) or BrushedBritishGold (Zucchetti PanS, Helm) deliver the golden warmth that signs Art Deco. PVD finishes hold their colour over time with no loss through use. Brass also appears in locks, handles, mirror beading and light fittings. Measured across a few pieces, it structures the room without saturating it.
