Kitchen splashback, seamless large format or a dialogue of materials
The splashback is the wall that attracts every glance and every splash. It is also the kitchen's freest piece of drawing, the one that can tip a project from ordinary to signature. At Atelier Matière, we welcome architects and private clients who want the right splashback, the one that holds up technically and sings visually.
Three main families, the seamless large format for a continuous effect, decorative ceramic for a coloured gesture, a dialogue with a cold material (stainless steel, brass) for contrast. Each option has its logic, we help to choose the one that suits the kitchen and its uses.
The seamless large format
A single porcelain stoneware slab, 160x320 or 300x150, laid from the worktop up to the extractor hood, no joints, continuous reading. A Calacatta, Statuario or Fior di Bosco marble effect creates a precious splashback without the maintenance of marble. A concrete or stone effect brings a rawer feel. Lea Ceramiche, Florim and Cotto d'Este offer this dimension in many finishes.
Decorative ceramic, a coloured gesture
WOW Design contemporary zelliges, Cevica's bevelled tiles and the glazes of Fornace Brioni or Quintessenza reinvent the splashback as a piece of drawing. Dense colour, light relief, pattern-set installation (herringbone, vertical, horizontal), the kitchen wall becomes a living surface. Common formats are 7.5x30 or 10x30, used generously from the backsplash to the ceiling above the island.
A dialogue with metal
Brushed stainless steel, a PVD brass splashback, a patinated copper sheet, metal keeps its place in the kitchen, especially in dialogue with stone or stoneware. Stainless steel is the most technical, resistant to anything, wiped clean in a single pass. TREEMME or Zucchetti PVD finishes harmonise the splashback with the taps.
Dimensioning and installation
A standard splashback is 60 cm tall between the worktop and the upper units. For an open kitchen with no upper units, it can run up to the ceiling. Electrical outlets and the extractor hood are integrated into the cuts, with corners finished in mitre for returns. Installation is glued onto a flat, plumb and perfectly dry substrate.
