Tiles for the kitchen, floors, splashbacks and islands
The kitchen is one of the most demanding rooms in the home. Heat, grease splatter, impacts, heavy traffic, the finish has to take it all without compromising on design. At Atelier Matière, we build most kitchens around porcelain stoneware, for its mechanical strength, ease of maintenance and the richness of its effects. Natural stone keeps its place on islands and signature splashbacks, as long as it is properly sealed.
The challenge is to orchestrate floor, splashback, island and worktops as a single composition. To choose a format, a finish, a vein that dialogues with the light, the base units and the rest of the apartment. We receive clients by appointment in our two Paris showrooms to build the selection against the other materials in the project.
On the floor, the large format
Large-format porcelain stoneware (120x120, 160x320, up to 300x150 at Cotto d'Este) visually reduces the number of joints, enlarges the space and simplifies maintenance. Matt, slightly structured finishes offer a good balance between graphic clarity and anti-slip performance. A marble effect for classic kitchens revisited, a concrete or stone effect for contemporary lines, glazed terracotta for kitchens with an atelier feel.
The splashback, a signature piece
The splashback is the kitchen's first visual gesture. Large formats allow a seamless splashback from the worktop to the extractor hood, in continuity with the worktop if the same material is chosen. Marble-effect porcelain stoneware (Calacatta, Statuario, Fior di Bosco) brings the nobility of marble without its maintenance constraints. For more decorative kitchens, we love the dialogue between a coloured Cevica or WOW ceramic splashback and metal, brushed brass or stainless steel.
The island, solid stone or cladding
Two approaches. The first is an island in solid natural stone (Calacatta, travertine, Pietra Grey, Petra Stones or Marmi), worked across the top and the fall for a monolithic piece. The second is large-format porcelain stoneware cladding over a structure, with the same material on the floor for a continuous effect. The choice depends on the budget, the technical reach and the intended drawing.
Technical points to anticipate
Stoneware thickness (6 mm for the splashback, 9 to 12 mm for the floor), anti-slip finish rated R10 or R11 for kitchens opening onto the outside, layout coordinated with drains and sockets, protection of edges with a 45° mitre. Our in-house technical team validates the layout with you and your kitchen designer before ordering.
